FAQs
What does each soft-sub package include?
It has Karaoke soft-sub in ASS format for several combination of Romaji, Japanese, and English Translation lyrics. For people who wants compatibility and simplicity, I’ve also included Romaji, Japanese, and English lyrics in standard basic SRT format as well.
How come some of the English Translations aren’t the same as those posted by Gin and/or others?
I’ve made some editing to the English so it matches closer to the Japanese language order displayed in the lyrics. I tried the best I can to make the edit while trying to keep the context and meaning the same. I haven’t formally studied Japanese at all. So if there are any mistakes, pardon my errors and let me know so I can update and learn from them.
What video did you based on to make the subs?
I’ve made the soft-subs based on the MPEG-2 version of the PVs. However, it will work for AVI files also, as long as the AVI and MPEG-2 were encoded from the same source (which would have the same timing).
How to I play the lyrics/subs?
To play the lyrics, you will need to install VobSub (Google for it or get K-Lite Mega Codec Pack if you don’t have it).
How to get Karaoke to work?
For the simple ASS sub Karaoke Effects to work, the key REQUIREMENT is that you MUST TURN OFF “Pre-buffer subpictures” UNDER “Misc” TAB, otherwise the soft-sub karaoke effects would not work.
How to I switch lyrics?
When you play a video with subs displayed, DirectVobSub icon should be in the systray next to the clock. Right-click on that icon and it will show you a list of subtitles available. Just select that one you want to display.
I have VobSub installed, why it doesn’t display the subs?
Make sure you have the video file and subtitle files named the same. My softsub files, for example, are in this format:
“YUI - Feel My Soul (PV) [MPEG-2].Romaji-Jap-Eng Karaoke.ass”
Rename your file to “YUI - Feel My Soul (PV) [MPEG-2].mpg”. The “Romaji-Jap-Eng Karaoke” part does not need to be there in your video filename. But for the subtitle files, it adds the bonus that when you right click on DirectVobSub icon to change subtitles, you will see “Romaji-Jap-Eng Karaoke” as an option, rather than your file name, so you will know which subtitle/lyrics you are using.
How come when I select a subtitle with Japanese lyrics, it doesn’t display anything but symbols?
The lyrics subtitle files uses Unicode characters. Windows XP should have no problem displaying them, as long as East Asian Languages are installed. For Windows 2000, even with East Asian Languages installed, you may neither need to change the font used in the subtitle files (Arial) to another font in Windows 2000 that has Unicode characters (such as Lucida Sans Unicode; just edit the file as text file) or use a registry patch that does FontLink to include another font type when the base font doesn’t have the character that programs are looking for. I can post up more info on this upon request.
What player do you use to play your video with the subs?
I use Media Player Classic. It works perfectly. You can get it separately or it can be installed with K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.
Specific Questions - Rolling Star:
I have noticed that one line in Rolling Star, Gin translated it to “Stardust falls from a Rolling Star”. How come the translation in your sub is different?
I haven’t studied Japanese at all so pardon my mistake if I’m wrong. The line comes from “Doro darake Rolling Star” (泥だらけ Rolling Star). At first “Stardust falls from a Rolling Star” didn’t really make sense to me. I did a search with online Japanese dictionaries and this is what they gave me:
泥 - mud
だらけ - implying (negatively) that something is full of, e.g. mistakes
Full of mud?? Muddy Rolling Star … haha, right >sarcastic< Full of MISTAKE?? Mistake prone Rolling Star?
If you look at the lyrics: “I fall completely over”, “I stumpled” … sounds like she makes mistakes often, clumsy don’t you think? And is it really a “Star” from the sky? More like a “Star” as in a celebrity (movie star, music star). And who’s the “Star” that is rolling along these days? YUI, herself, of course. That’s how I come to the conclusion of “A Clumsy Rolling Star” seems a more proper meaning. 泥だらけ seems to be used quite often in song lyrics, including the first words of LIFE (altough in that context it does mean the street full of mud or dirt). When spoken about a person, it is probably some sort of Japanese saying because in English, “Full of Mud” doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. Perhaps another way of looking at this is that she is covered, “full of mud” and she is loosing the sense of direction (in life).
Other Questions:
** The PVs I have are off sync, meaning the video (e.g. singing lips) doesn’t match the audio. How can I fix that?
You can either use MatrixMixer or AC3Filter (recommended). You have to enable the use of the filter for MPEG Audio and PCM. Then you can use the filter to adjust the audio/video sync.
** Does your MPEG-2 files have the audio/video sync problem?
Yes I did, but not anymore. The original videos, probably same as those you download here, have the audio being about 150ms late. You can use this setting for the filter I described above. However, I manually edited the MPEG-2 files I have and shifted the audio to account for the delay and now all my MPEG-2 videos have the lips that match the words being sung.
** How do I do the MPEG-2 editing myself?
Look up http://www.videohelp.com/. It has all guides about video editing.
** Can you post your edited MPEG-2 files for me so I don’t have to edit it myself?
If there is enough requests, I may upload it when I’m free.
SIMPLY AWESOME!!! I’ve just recently gotten to know Yui and her wonderful voice through CHERRY and I was so lucky to stumble across your page
